ACL Reconstruction Triples 20-Year Risk of Knee Arthroplasty

Anterior cruciate ligament injuries frequently lead to post-traumatic osteoarthritis, a prevalent cause of long-term disability that often persists despite successful surgical stabilization [1, 2]. While reconstruction aims to restore mechanical stability and facilitate a return to high-level activity, it does not fully eliminate the risk of degenerative joint disease [3, 4]. Current evidence suggests that concomitant pathologies, particularly meniscal and chondral injuries, significantly accelerate this articular decline [3, 5]. Furthermore, the risk of subsequent injury to the contralateral limb remains a significant concern during the first decade of follow-up [6, 7]. To better inform patient counseling, researchers have now utilized a massive population database to quantify the specific relative risk of progressing to total knee arthroplasty over a twenty-year horizon.
