Autologous Reconstruction Reduces Failure Rates After Breast-Conserving Therapy

As more women undergo breast-conserving therapy (BCT), a growing number later present for mastectomy and subsequent reconstruction [1]. This clinical scenario introduces a distinct challenge, as prior irradiation, a common component of BCT, is known to compromise tissue vascularity and healing. This damage increases the risk of complications like reconstruction failure and capsular contracture, particularly with implants [2, 3, 4]. While autologous reconstruction is often associated with high patient satisfaction and durability [5], its specific outcomes compared to implant-based methods in the post-BCT setting have remained insufficiently quantified [6]. A recent retrospective study provides needed clarity on complication risks, offering data to better inform surgical planning and patient counseling for this specific population.
