Adverse childhood experiences are well-documented precursors to a wide array of adult morbidities, including cardiovascular disease, metabolic dysfunction, and chronic psychiatric conditions [1, 2]. Research into the biological embedding of this stress suggests that early trauma may disrupt the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and trigger persistent systemic inflammation [3, 4]. These physiological shifts are thought to alter the trajectory of healthy development, potentially leading to premature cellular aging and increased allostatic load, the cumulative wear and tear on the body from chronic stress [5, 6]. While many studies have focused on long-term outcomes in adults, the immediate impact of recent maltreatment on a child's physiological regulatory systems remains less clear [7]. To bridge this gap, researchers recently examined how specific types of early adversity influence physiological age and homeostatic stability in the pediatric population, offering clinicians new insights into the immediate biological toll of abuse.
