Dual PH Therapy Before BPA Reduces Complications, Improves Outcomes in CTEPH

For patients with inoperable chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) or residual disease after endarterectomy, balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA) offers a critical therapeutic option to improve hemodynamics and function [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]. However, the procedure is not without risk, as periprocedural complications like pulmonary vessel injury and reperfusion edema remain a clinical concern [3, 6]. While pulmonary hypertension (PH)-targeted medical therapies are known to be beneficial in CTEPH management, their optimal use as a preparatory step for BPA is an area of active investigation [7, 8, 6]. A recent study using data from a national Dutch registry now provides specific evidence on how the intensity of medical pretreatment influences both the safety of BPA and subsequent clinical outcomes.
