Extrapulmonary TB Linked to Persistent Lung Function Deficits, Respiratory Symptoms

Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) is well-documented as a cause of long-term respiratory impairment, often leaving survivors with chronic symptoms and diminished lung function known as post-tuberculosis lung disease [1, 2, 3]. This can manifest as abnormal spirometry, persistent cough, and reduced quality of life [4, 5, 3]. However, while extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) constitutes a quarter of the global tuberculosis burden, the potential for lasting pulmonary damage in these patients has remained largely uncharacterized [6]. As healthcare systems increasingly focus on integrated care for infectious and non-communicable diseases, a new study provides critical evidence that the respiratory consequences of tuberculosis extend beyond cases with primary lung involvement [7].
