Indian ICUs: Women Receive Less Organ Support, Similar Mortality to Men

While clinicians continually refine intensive care unit (ICU) management, from sedation protocols [1, 2, 3] to mechanical ventilation strategies [4] and nutritional support [5, 6], disparities in care and outcomes can persist. Factors like age, comorbidities, and specific diagnoses are established determinants of prognosis and treatment intensity [7, 8]. However, the influence of patient sex on the provision of organ support and subsequent clinical outcomes, particularly in large, diverse populations, remains an area requiring closer examination [9, 10]. A recent large-scale observational study from India now provides significant data on how critical care delivery and mortality may differ between male and female patients [11, 12].
