Autism spectrum disorder affects approximately 0.6 percent of children globally, presenting a clinical challenge that requires early identification to improve long-term communication outcomes [1]. While the global mean age of diagnosis is approximately 60 months, clinicians frequently encounter children much earlier who exhibit significant delays in functional speech [2]. These language deficits are often resistant to standard interventions, with nearly 30 percent of children remaining minimally verbal even after years of specialized educational support [3]. Beyond the core diagnostic features, research has increasingly focused on the role of environmental factors, including heavy metal exposure and nutritional status, as potential contributors to the heterogeneous clinical presentations of the disorder [4]. A new study examines the intersection of trace element levels and brain microarchitecture to better understand the physiological basis of these communication impairments, raising the prospect that routine metabolic screening could one day help identify reversible drivers of language delay.
