Resident Response Vehicles Increase Exposure to High-Acuity Prehospital Care

Emergency medicine training traditionally focuses on acute stabilization within the hospital, yet the continuum of care begins long before a patient arrives at the emergency department. While residents must master the management of high-acuity conditions like sepsis and cardiac arrest, the prehospital environment presents unique challenges in triage and early intervention [1, 2]. Systemic issues such as emergency department crowding can delay definitive care, placing a premium on the quality of initial field assessments and medical direction [3]. Despite the importance of this phase, significant gaps remain in residency curricula, particularly regarding specialized populations and complex out-of-hospital scenarios [4]. Ensuring that trainees are prepared for these environments is critical for mitigating the high rates of burnout and medical errors associated with high-stress clinical practice [5].
