Sickle Cell Trait Not Linked to Overall Mortality or Cardiovascular Disease

Sickle cell trait (SCT), the heterozygous state for the sickle cell gene, is carried by an estimated 300 million people worldwide, with prevalence reaching as high as 45.8% in some populations [1, 2]. While the severe morbidity of sickle cell disease is well understood, the clinical significance of SCT remains a subject of considerable debate [1, 3]. Historically viewed as a benign condition, a growing body of evidence has linked SCT to specific risks, including renal medullary carcinoma [4], pulmonary embolism, and chronic kidney disease [3]. Yet, other analyses have found no clear association with outcomes like deep venous thrombosis or stroke, creating uncertainty for clinicians counseling patients [1, 3]. This ambiguity, fueled by conflicting results from studies with different designs, highlights the need for large, genetically-defined population studies to clarify the true burden of disease [5]. A recent large-scale prospective study now provides substantial new data on mortality and morbidity in a general adult population with genetically confirmed SCT.
