Thalamic Connections to Medial Prefrontal Cortex Predict Impulsivity

Impulsivity, often manifesting as a preference for immediate gratification over larger, long-term rewards, is a transdiagnostic feature in clinical practice. This behavior, quantified as delay discounting, is associated with conditions ranging from addiction and bipolar disorder to problematic internet use and binge eating, contributing significantly to functional impairment and mortality risk [1, 2, 3, 4]. It can also present as self-harm, particularly in younger patients, and is implicated in the behavioral dysregulation seen in Parkinson's disease and during tobacco withdrawal [5, 6, 7]. Despite its clinical prevalence, the neural circuits governing individual differences in impulsivity are not fully understood, and existing therapeutic strategies often have limited efficacy [8, 9, 10]. A recent neuroimaging study provides a more detailed map of the brain architecture underlying these complex decisions.
