Prenatal SRI Exposure Linked to Altered Fetal Brain and Placental Growth

Maternal depression affects approximately 10 percent of pregnancies and is associated with significant adverse outcomes, including preterm birth, low birth weight, and impaired neonatal adaptation [1]. While serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs) are frequently prescribed to maintain maternal wellbeing, their use remains a subject of clinical debate due to potential risks such as persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn and neonatal adaptation syndrome [2, 3]. Current evidence suggests that while absolute risks for many complications remain low, the long-term impact of these medications on fetal neurodevelopment is not yet fully characterized [4]. Furthermore, many primary care and obstetric providers may find that local prescribing guidelines regarding these risks are inconsistent, complicating the process of individualized clinical decision-making [5]. A recent investigation provides detailed imaging data on how both maternal symptoms and pharmacological intervention influence the structural maturation of the fetal brain and placenta.
