Astrocytic Enzyme Regulates Vascular Stability in Alzheimer's Disease Model

While new anti-amyloid therapies for Alzheimer's disease (AD) are becoming available, their use is often complicated by vascular side effects, underscoring the critical link between cerebrovascular health and AD pathology [1, 2]. Vascular dysfunction is a core component of the disease, frequently preceding cognitive symptoms and contributing directly to neurodegeneration [3, 2]. Within this context, astrocytes, the glial cells responsible for maintaining the neurovascular unit, have emerged as key players. Their dysfunction can drive neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and impaired clearance of amyloid-beta (Aβ) [4, 5, 6]. A recent study in a murine model now isolates a specific astrocytic enzyme, soluble epoxide hydrolase, as a potential therapeutic target to stabilize the vasculature in the presence of amyloid pathology [7, 8].
