Fentanyl-involved poisonings remain a primary driver of overdose deaths, underscoring the urgent public health crisis [3, 4]. For patients, chronic opioid exposure can induce complex neuroadaptations that alter reward pathways, complicating efforts to maintain abstinence and engage with non-drug-related rewards [5, 6]. While the central role of dopamine in opioid addiction is well-documented, the specific mechanisms by which mu-opioid receptor agonists like fentanyl modulate distinct dopamine signaling patterns, particularly in the context of natural rewards, require further clarification [7]. A deeper understanding of these neurobiological underpinnings is critical for developing more effective strategies to manage opioid dependence and improve patient outcomes [8, 9].
